Apostille
What is an "apostil"?
An apostil is a stamp which is affixed to the documents originating from the official bodies of the participating states under the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement for Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents (Hague, 5 October 1961).
Why do I need an apostil?
An apostil certifies the genuine signature and position of the signatory as well as genuine seal or stamp authenticating the document.
What kind of documents are eligible for an apostil?
An apostil may be stamped both on the original official documents and notarized copies. The Hague Convention covers:
- Documents of Civil Status
- Birth Certificate
- Marriage Certificate
- Divorce Certificate
- Death Certificate
- Certificates from Registrar Offices
- Documents of Education
- Diplomas with Annexes
Special cases:
An apostil may be stamped only on a notarized copy of a Tax Registration Certificate, Certificate of the Primary State Registration Number, etc. Articles of Association Documents issued by governmental bodies of the former Soviet Republics before 1 January 1992.
An apostil may be stamped only on the original of a written request certificate of consent power of attorney and other notarized documents (except notarized copies).
How is an apostil attached?
An apostil is attached where there is empty space in the document or overleaf or to a separate piece of paper. In such cases the pages of the document and apostil-containing paper are bound and laced together. The laced pages are numbered and authenticated by the signature of a person who stamped the apostil.
A frequently asked question is about the apostil issuing authorities. All documents issued in the Republic of Belarus may be apostil-certified and legalized in three authorized bodies only: Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Justice and Ministry of Education.
An apostil may be stamped on the original document but may be also issued to authenticate notarized copies. Special notarial offices are in a position to notarize documents.
